Brownish Sandstone
Early 11th Century

Chandela Dynasty
Khajuraho region, Madhya Pradesh

Length: 31.5 in (80 cms)

Neutral subjects depicting animals and apsaras were a favourite among craftsmen in the medieval period in Central India. The external stone architecture in Khajuraho and adjoining areas would often have running panels depicting various such subjects. This lively sculpture has an interesting theme. It shows an elephant and a lion in combat. The panel has very good depth. The elephant has a nice rounded body and is adorned with decorative ornaments. The lion is shown with a fierce looking face and luxurious hair growth. A human figure who stands by the side appears to be swaying away to distance himself from the dangerous encounter. Fortunately, the animal figures are complete.

The Chandela Dynasty ruled the Bundelkhand region from the 10th to the 13th Century. In the 13th Century the region was attacked by invaders, and many temples were destroyed. The few surviving examples of antiquities from this period in private ownership today remain a collectors' delight.

The state archaeology museum in Khajuraho has a spectacular collection of Chandela art. The temples in the area are superbly maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and are admired by tourists from across the world. It is classified as a World Heritage Site.
