Kaumari

Granite
9th Century

Pallava Dynasty
Tamil Nadu

Height: 24.0 in (61 cms)

As per hindu mythology there exist seven holy mothers, known as the Saptamatrikas. They are Vaishnavi, Varahi, Chamundi, Indrani, Maheshwari, Kaumari and Brahmini. Depictions of the Matrikas in Indian Art began at a very early stage. During the Pallava dynasty sculptural representations of the Matrikas assumed great importance. They were carved individually with each one holding their respective attributes.

This sculpture is that of Kaumari, the female aspect of Kumara or Skanda, the son of Shiva. She is shown seated on a pedestal in the lalitasana posture. Her form is four handed. Her upper arms hold the spear and shakti. Her face has excellent clarity and a pleasant disposition. The sculpture in general has a lovely coarse texture. This coupled with the weathering has resulted in a rich appearance. The proportion, jewellery and form clearly point to the later phase of the Pallava dynasty - the 9th Century A.D.
