This beautiful sculpture is that of a chauri-bearer. The work has excellent depth and her body is well modeled with the left hand resting casually on her hip. The right hand is held up and bears the chauri or fly-whisk. The end of the chauri that bears the bristles peeps out from behind her head and almost gives the viewer a misleading impression of being an unusual hairdo. The posture has a very artistic sway. The form, proportion and facial features show a very strong Chalukyan influence. Being an early sculpture, the jewellery is simple and the placement of the feet is primitive in style. The expression is pleasant with a sweet smile. The breasts are proportionate with large hips accentuating the beauty of the sculpture. There are very few examples of Rashtrakuta sculpture in private ownership making this piece a prized possession for any ardent collector.

Rashtrakuta Dynasty

The Rashtrakuta Dynasty ruled various parts of India from the 6th to the 10th Century. Various regions in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh,Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were under their control. The dynasty was highly committed to art, literature and education.

The art of the Rashtrakutas are visible in regions like Ellora, Badami and Pattadakal, just to name a few.

The magnificent Elephanta Caves in Maharashtra are also the creation of the powerful Rashtrakutas.
