PROVENANCE
From an Important Private Collection, Mumbai

Subject plays an important part in selecting an Indian miniature. This particular example has a wonderful theme. It shows Krishna and the gopis playing blind man’s bluff in the forests of Vrindavan. Krishna is shown covering Radha’s eyes as her friends take cover within the thick forests. One can see the faces of the gopis peeping out in curiosity from within the foliage. At the bottom, the flowing Yamuna is shown with lotuses in bloom. The blue sky and shaded trees are seen in the far horizon. The yellow and red clothing add a dash of colour to this predominantly green work. The palms are made to look as though they are swaying in the wind.
