GANDHARA, 2ND - 3RD CENTURY
Green Schist
10 in (25.4 cm) wide

NON-EXPORTABLE REGISTERED ANTIQUITY

PROVENANCE
The Estate of Khorshed Karanjavala

The Buddha is seated on a plinth, with a halo around his head. His right hand assumes the abhaya mudra, a gesture which signifies protection and reassurance. The two disciples flanking him are clad in dhotis, and they fold their hands in reverence to the Buddha. The foliage above the three figures indicates that the Buddha is seated under a tree.

This sculpture is similar to a relief in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which was once part of "...a series of panels that depicted different scenes from the Buddha's life alternating with empaneled Indo-Corinthian columns and topped by a heavy torus molding of laurel leaves." (Dye III, Arts of India, p. 102)
