Silver and enamel

20th century
Chamba and Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

The 'tikka' is traditionally worn as a part of a 'shingarpatti' or 'jhatpattu' - a head ornament that frames the face, consisting of a round or crescent shaped central pendant placed at the crown of the head ('tikka'), two metal bands laid around the head ('patti') and earrings ('karnphul-jhumka'). Only a few families owned complete 'shingarpattis', and their use was reserved for special occasions. Isolated 'tikkas' and/or 'pattis' were more common for daily wear.
