Buff Sandstone
11th Century

Solanki Dynasty
Gujarat

Height: 16.9 in (43 cms)

Jinas or Tirthankaras are enlightened beings who preach spirituality. Jainism has 24 Tirthankaras, the first being Rishabanatha and the last being Vardhamana Mahaveera. Most Tirthankaras look identical except Rishabanatha, Parsvanatha and Mahaveera who can be identified if their specific features are present in the work.

This captivating and highly important sculpture made of buff sandstone originates from Gujarat. It shows a Jina seated in the lotus pose in dhyana mudra. The emblem of Srivatsa can be seen on the chest. The stylized cushion is carved in a style that is typical of this region. The colour of the stone is very pleasing to the eye. The weathering is such that it has imparted a two-tone colour to the sculpture. This gives a rich velvet-like appearance. Most ancient sculptures get enriched with age. The gradual ageing process softens the texture enhancing the beauty. The quality, subject and form of this artefact is such that it emits a soothing aura. The viewer gets enchanted by the peace and tranquility that is so characteristic of the subject.
