Everything is an instrument and everything is a medium in calligraphy. Once you appreciate this, there is no question of restricting yourself. Experimentation then comes naturally to you. And there is never any fear... When it comes to expressing the feelings in words through the means of letters, there are very few of Achyut Palav`s class in India. He is one of India`s most recognized calligrapher and painter. The art of beautiful handwriting comes naturally to him, as magical strokes flow freely from the plethora of instruments he uses to mark his surface with ink.
His motto is to bring calligraphy bring closer to the masses. In this art, written words become masterpieces created with measured strokes from a raw reed pen filled with a dark, viscous liquid. India is one of the three greatest calligraphic centers of the world apart from the Arab countries and China, and Palav is determined to keep the more than five-century-old legacy alive by demonstrating the basics of calligraphy and imbibing them in children from an early age.
Born in 1960 in Mumbai, he completed his General Diploma in Art from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art in 1982. His love for the art began in his early schooldays when he was told by his teacher to write the thought for the day on the black board. He then realized that there was more to letters than what everyone usually saw. He joined the Sir J.J. School of Art and under the guidance of R.K. Joshi honed his skills in calligraphy.
Today Palav`s calligraphy instruments include a toothbrush, shaving brush, a blush-on brush, a spatula and a tin lid converted into yet another writing instrument apart from a the regular pen. The celebrated calligrapher explores various surfaces like canvas, the cover of a keyboard, slate, ceramic tiles and wooden sets to dabble in different themes. He started with working on paper, but now his calligraphy has found its way to name plates, invitation cards, logos and even clothes.
For this humble, soft-spoken calligrapher, letters or alphabets does not merely make words, He believes that each letter has its own character and brings out the meaning of these characters through calligraphy.
Palav has worked with the likes of poet Imtiaz Dharker, who simply had to have her poems written by him when she saw samples of his work. He brought out the deep underlying thought in her poetry through calligraphy. He also worked on a canvas with painter Subhash Awchat where his calligraphy blended with the latter`s painting.
A letter has power, it`s a visual, Palav states. "When you make a stroke on paper, it`s as though you are giving vent to your power, the hidden force inside you. It brings out the creative side of you. Letters are immensely powerful. They help you create and they help you de-stress," he narrates.
