Born in Nantherbagan, North Calcutta, on August 15 1894. Satish Chandra displayed an interest in painting from his early childhood. He entered the then Government Art School at the age of 18 but had to give up his studies after three years.
After his father`s death, Satish Chandra became an agent of an insurance company and studied painting privately. He was soon illustrating books and magazine articles and became connected with Macmillan and company and the Bengali Journal `Basumati`.
Later he joined the Government College of Art as a teacher and became its Vice-Principal and officiating Principal. After his retirement from the college he became the principal of the Indian College of Art and Draughtsmanship in dharamtolla Street. He also represented West Bengal in Lalit kala Academi, New Delhi.
Although a pupil of Abanindranath Tagore, Satish Chandra represented in his paintings a trend different from Abanindranath`s disciples. Along with Atul Bose and Jamini Roy, he followed the realistic trend, his forte being the female figure. In his Landscape, he used to claim that he was influenced by the scenery around Deoghar, in Bihar, where he spent a large part of his life.
Satish Sinha died at the age of 71, in the year 1965.
