Gowda won an Inlaks scholarship to study painting in the Royal College of Art, London in 1984. She has also spent some time at Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris, and followed this up with a stint as teacher in Mysore. She visits Switzerland frequently.

Most of Gowda's work seems to bear the impress of her experiences since the eighties as well as her life abroad. There is a hard edge to her treatment of themes delineating the place of women in society. This is a painting of protest, and there is no doubt that the artist feels she must give of everything she has to show her involvement with the struggle.

Gowda has exhibited her works widely, in galleries in India's major cities as well as in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1994 and in New York in 1996.
