Here is an artist, who sources his inspiration from mythology, and yet, values the contemporariness of his work. Hanuman Kambli is among the renowned Goan artists of today.
Born and brought up in Pirna village, in North Goa, Hanuman still cherishes the childhood images of rusty but simple villagers, enchanting nature, and an almost still life. The classes in those days would be conducted in the premises of a temple since the village school did not have a permanent building. While the teacher taught the lessons, the chanting of religious hymns would go on. Masks of Kirtimukh, a Janus-like multi-faced persona, adorned the temple walls. The teacher would often silence his wards by saying that the demon would punish them.
The artist reminisces to say, "I would be scared of the demon. For me, he represented the ugly side of life. The imagery in my work is a residue of my early memories of the Hindu temples in Goa. The icon that repeatedly surfaces is the one that frightened me as a young boy, and which obviously has left an indelible impression on my mind."
Kambli's work has elements of traditional imagery, from both, religious sources and art sources about religion. However, he does not rely only on mythology, and presents themes and ideas drawn from his immediate surroundings. In his prints, one can see his family, his home, the land of his ancestors and the Indian gods, apart from the encroaching builders and "developers" that leave a stark impression on a viewer. His paintings invariably deal with current socioeconomic issues. The impact of development on the culture of Goa is a recurring theme.
The process of delving into the inner recesses of mind, not only of others but also of the self must go on, he says. Constant winding and unwinding of thoughts, ideas and themes, keep an artist in tune with his creative instincts. For this to happen, there should be a quest to be honest to one's spirit, more so for a creative person. True to this philosophy, Kambli self-introspects all the time; he questions himself, tries to analyze the trends in society, and to understand the people around. He says, "All of us wear masks to hide our real face. This perhaps has become inevitable in todays modern, mechanical age, when human beings feel suppressed for various reasons. Primarily, urbanization has corrupted our self-being. We cannot even enjoy nature in its truest sense, and beauty, because we are reluctant to be open and free. We hold ourselves back, and deprive ourselves of a divine joy. I depict this confused state of mind, and try to show the hurdles that prevent us from being in unison with the nature."
As an uninformed child, he related good and bad virtues to the looks of an individual. It was the simplification of a complex issue. The scary face of a demon in the temples meant to the child, all that was disparaging in life. As he grew up, he realized that one's face speaks little about oneself, and that one's appearance can be deceiving. So, it's unadvisable to take one on one's face value.
Kambli paints the demonic faces, which have a frightening and fierce look about them, quite in contrast to the creator, who is a calm person. The painter laughs at this suggestion to add: "The face even could be mine. I may outwardly appear calm, but need not be so. I just don't want to point out the dichotomy in society. As I have said, it's also a process of self-introspection." However, the artist does not harbour ill feeling about any individual for the way he or she behaves. He refuses to be judgmental, believing that even evil is part of human nature.
Apart from the strong influence of childhood images, Kambli is deeply moved by the wide spectrum of events at the social, political and artistic level. He says, "Two separate news reports of the killing of a baby girl foetus: one in the tribal regions of India and the other in the US, shocked me. Both the acts are equally gruesome, though performed in different modes. This is a universal phenomenon that I contemplated over, relating it to my personal experiences, which added to the intensity of the feelings. My work 'Descend of mother' is based on it."
He adds, "I don't want my paintings to be a work of fantasy. Though I am committed to my roots, the contemporariness of my work is more important to me as an artist."
