Jhupu Adhikari considers the works of Pablo Picasso his foremost inspiration. Adhikari is among the first-generation of artists to receive their art and graphic design training outside of India, in England in 1951.
Speaking about his works, the artist says, “Though my passion for Picasso is apparent in some of my work, my drawings and paintings do not follow any rigid style or pattern. I paint in the style that comes naturally to me at the moment of time and always look to portray the truth - in the subject, object and inspiration that provoked the painting…”
Adhikari’s work ranges freely between different genres and styles. Nevertheless, while the artist’s oeuvre has included landscapes, still lifes, portraits and more, there has always been a sharp social commentary that edges his work. Greatly affected by events like the Nellie massacres and the recent Asian tsunami, Adhikari’s paintings, including those from his critically acclaimed Clown series, reflect his understanding of and reactions to these events.
Born in 1927, Adhikari studied Fine Arts at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, in 1950, and Graphic Design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Diploma in Design, in 1954. He is the recipient of several awards including the Maharaja of Darbhanga’s Gold Medal for watercolour in December 1949. The artist’s solo shows include those held at Gallery Alternatives, New Delhi, in 2006; Gallery Ganesha, New Delhi, in 2005; and Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 1998. Amongst the group shows in which his works have been featured are ‘Pastels and Contemporary Indian Art’ presented by Art Motif at the Stainless Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008; ‘Colors of Healing’ at Art Junction, New Delhi, in 2005; and Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 2003,2002,2001,2000,1999 and 1998. The artist lives and works in Kolkata.
