Mumbai’s Art Deco heritage is truly unique with not one, but two distinct Deco precincts – one in Cooperage, skirting the grand Oval Maidan, and the other, known as the ‘Queen’s Necklace’, along Marine Drive. This, together with the city’s stunning ensemble of Victorian Gothic structures, makes South Mumbai an exceptional case for a UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination. Over the last decade, several stakeholders have come together to support this project and submit a tentative document to UNESCO outlining the bid. Currently, this document is available on the UNESCO website as part of the list of Tentative World Heritage Sites proposed by India, at http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5740/

To finally have the site inscribed, however, a Comprehensive Dossier and Management Plan must be prepared and presented to several governmental and intergovernmental organisations, including UNESCO, which is a very cost intensive exercise. In an effort to raise funds for this final step in the nomination and inscription process, Saffronart and its consignors have committed to donating 5% of the proceeds from the sale of select lots to the Oval-Cooperage Residents’ Association (OCRA), towards Mumbai’s bid for UNESCO World Heritage Site Nomination.
