An acclaimed painter and educator, V S Adurkar is most celebrated for his contribution to art education in India. Born in 1907, Adurkar studied painting at the Sir J J School of Art in Mumbai and the Slade School in London. His artworks, mostly in watercolour, display a fascinating blend of European and Indian artistic traditions. Through his paintings, he depicted traditionally Indian subjects and scenes in a style that was rooted in European academic realism.
In 1947, Adurkar was appointed as the Director of the Sir J J School of Art in Mumbai. The first Indian to serve in this role, he led the institution until his retirement in 1953. He was also the first Indian to be made an Associate of the Royal College of Arts and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers-Engravers headquartered in London.
