- - Khanna’s earliest paintings of bandwallas, dating to the 1970s and 80s, immediately follow a period in which his work largely meditated on war, death and persecution at the hands of authority. Deeply moved by India’s wars with China and Pakistan, and the more recent Bangladesh war, he painted, in several large works from the period, military leaders in discussion, blind to the effects that their rulings had on the common man.
