PEARLS

The creation of natural pearls is a spontaneous and unusual phenomenon that is entirely reliant on natural processes. As a result of their rarity, these gems were only adorned by royals, aristocrats, and socialites. Even though the introduction of pearl farming in the 20th century led to the increased availability of cultured pearls, natural pearls, such as Basra pearls, continue to lead in terms of quality and worth.

Along with the natural or artificial processes that are involved in the creation of a pearl, the quality of the gem can also be evaluated through an examination of its physical properties. Recent studies by the Gemological Institute of America in Los Angeles devised an evaluation system known as 'GIA's 7 Pearl Value Factors', which lists seven indicators to define the quality of a pearl: size, shape, colour, lustre, surface, nacre thickness and matching. Among these, lustre is one of the most important qualities of a pearl, referring to the reflection of light off the surface of a pearl and the refraction of light from its layers of nacre. It is sometimes referred to as the glow of the pearl. High lustre pearls usually signify pearls with a thick coating of nacre and are more valuable.

Landmark aesthetic and jewellery-making movements of the 20th century - such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernism - have fashioned pearls into imaginative jewellery pieces that have been adorned by women and men alike. Despite the many transformations and upgrades the gem has undergone over history, today's pearls continue to symbolise the age-old virtues granted to them: purity, wisdom, and serenity.
