The works of Prabhakar Kolte exhibits, at once, his admiration and influence from the works of Swiss-born German artist Paul Klee. He adopted an abstract language with faintly representational imagery, buried under layers of paint. His early canvases displayed a flamboyant use of colour that permeated through shapes in different combinations. His later works are much controlled, exhibiting a sophisticated orchestration of elements and quilts of colour, evoking the meditative works of Klee.

The present lot was part of a series that were executed on commission from the owner of a shipping company based in Mumbai. The commission was a collective undertaking by a group of artists, that included Prabhakar Barwe, as per Kolte’s recollection. The present lot was acquired by a seasoned collector from a ship that had come to Alang, Bhavnagar from whom it was purchased by the present consignor. Owing to the nature of the commission, the composition emulates an aquatic theme, predominantly blue with composite shapes and figures. It reflects the artist’s interest in a spontaneous expression of form and a deep comprehension of colour.
