Amitabha Banerjee's forte is the forceful, economical and apt use of line, the synergy of which brings his works to life. This rightly makes him a master of the graphic printmaking medium. His affair with the medium began when he participated in a workshop conducted by American graphic artist, Paul Lingren of the Smithsonian Institute in Delhi, while still a student at the Government School of Arts in 1970.

Born in 1929 in Bangladesh, Banerjee studied at the Government School of Arts, Calcutta. His important exhibitions include the Third British International Biennale (1972), Western-Pacific Print Biennale, Australia (1976), Intergrafik, Germany in 1978 and 1984, Seven Contemporary Artists, Birla Academy of Art and Culture. Kolkata (1978), Indian Prints, Amsterdam (1984), Printmaking in India, Festival of India, USA (1985), exhibition at Waterloo University, Canada (1985) and Lalit Kala Akademi exhibition, Delhi (1985 and 1986), and was honoured by Rabindra Bharati University with the lifetime achievement award in 2008.
