SHIVA ON MOUNT KAILASH ATTENDED BY NANDI AND MENDICANTS

Kangra, c. 1820
Opaque watercolour on paper
10.5 x 11.5 in (26.7 x 29.2 cm)

REGISTERED ANTIQUITY-NON-EXPORTABLE

Provenance: Property of a Gentleman, Mumbai

This Kangra School painting depicts Shiva seated cross-legged on a tiger skin in Kailas. Despite the size, once can see his facial features quite clearly. His hair is tied up in a bun, and the holy river Ganga flows down from the centre. A crescent moon crowns his bun. His vehicle Nandi sits nearby as a silent observer.

The painting acts as a compressor of narrative, showing a devotee at three different points in time: he is seen crossing the treacherous mountain range, making his way to Shiva, and finally paying his respects to him. The work has a marked simplicity, and the blue and red borders so typical of the School add to its beauty.
