When Mahisha was troubling the gods, they pooled their energies to create Durga. This Durga is the supreme goddess (Shakti) who defeated the demon Mahish. Therefore the epithet Mahishasurmardini. This episode is described in the Devi Mahamatya and is the subject of a large number of sculptures and paintings.
