A SANDSTONE SCULPTURE OF A GODDESS

Central India, 10th Century CE
Sandstone
Height: 17 in (43.2 cm)
Width: 6 in (15.2 cm)

REGISTERED ANTIQUITY-NON-EXPORTABLE

Provenance: Property of an Important Collector, New Delhi

This 10th century female figure could be that of an apsara, or celestial being. She displays classical Indian features: almond-shaped eyes, delicately arched eyebrows, a coy smile, full breasts, and round hips thrust to her left, heightening her sensuality. She appears to be holding an object in her left hand, while lightly holding her garment with her right hand. Her hair is coiled up and secured by a pin that resembles a fruit. The large, cylindrical earrings accentuate her beauty.
