GRANITE BUST OF A DWARPAL

Nayak Dynasty, 17th Century CE
Granite
Height: 20.5 in (52 cm)
Width: 17 in (43 cm)

REGISTERED ANTIQUITY-NON-EXPORTABLE

The Nayak Dynasty was founded by Vishwanath Nayak, which prospered greatly under his auspices. It was during this dynasty that beautiful edifices were constructed, and intricately sculpted stone figures of deities adorned palaces and homes of the aristocracy. Such sculptures were to be found in public places as well.

This stone is a bust of a Nayak dwarpal, or a guardian found at the doors of a temple. The facial features - bulging eyes, well-defined nose and prominent moustache are typical features of the Nayak dynasty. The warrior wears an elongated crown, and jewellery. At one point in time, the sculpture may have been a complete figure of a dwarpal, perhaps even sporting a club or sword as seen in sculpture of those times. What makes this Nayak dynasty sculpture stand apart are the crisp lines and simplicity.
