Our second interview in the studio visit series features New York based artist of Indian origin, Siona Benjamin. Siona is a painter originally from Bombay, now living in the US. Her work reflects her background of being brought up Jewish in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim society in India. In her paintings she combines the imagery of her past with the role she plays in America today, making a mosaic inspired by both Indian miniature paintings and Sephardic icons. Siona has exhibited in the US, Europe and Asia. She has been recently awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 2010-11 for art project titled: Faces: Weaving Indian Jewish Narratives.

Our second Speaker Series with a jewellery focus, this interview was held in conjunction with Reema Keswani’s illustrated talk ‘Shinde’s Jewels’, part of the Saffronart and Mercedes Benz Art & Aesthetics series. In this episode, Keswani, author of the book ‘Shinde’s Jewels’, traces the life of famous jewelry designer, A.V. Shinde from the first two decades of his sixty-five-year career designing for the fabled Maharajahs of India, to traveling the world as head designer for the diamond legend Harry Winston. Shinde’s authorized biographer, Keswani’s book lifts the shroud of mystery from a man whom the New York Times has called ‘a leading figure in design known only to cognoscenti.’ Working with the world’s rarest jewels, the late A.V. Shinde decorated everyone from the Queen of England to Madonna.

The first Saffronart Studio Visit is with Kolkata born and New York based artist Rina Banerjee. Banerjee talks about her experience of growing up in different urban cities and in communities of mixed cultural/racial locations that feeds as content in her work. By her use of a mix of Asian and western materials, Banerjee attempts to transform the cultural identity of these everyday objects. Her work thus looks less and less culturally specific and presents us with a compelling new way of seeing culture- a global, all-seeking one.

Coinciding with the major retrospective of Krishen Khanna’s work that Saffronart is presenting at Rabindra Bhavan, the Lalit Kala Akademi, in New Delhi (January 23 – February 5, 2010), this discussion offers an important and very personal insight into not only the development of the artist’s own work, but the evolution of modern Indian art over the last half century as well.
