Even as FN Souza’s Birth sold for over Rs 10 crore at a recent Christie’s auction, setting a record for Indian modern and contemporary work of art, canvases are making money back home as well. At the Saffronart Summer online auction, 600 bidders from 30 countries vied for the lots and when the hammer came down, it brought with it record prices for eight artists and over Rs 1 crore each for six works. Top on the list was Subodh Gupta’s untitled work that went for Rs 5.7 crore, followed by SH Raza’s Germination at Rs 4.2 crore. While Rashid Rana’s Red Carpet — 2 got Rs 2 crore, J Swaminathan’s untitled work went for Rs 1.84 crore and an untitled by Souza fetched Rs 1.63 crore
