In the summer or 1946 Picasso was on holiday in the South of France near the town of Vallauris, which was famous for its potteries. He visited its annual potters exhibition and there met the owners of the Madoura foundry, Suzanne and Georges Ramié. He was later invited to view their studio and straight away began working and painting with clay, completing three works.
