V. Zimmerli Art Museum Exhibition Catalogue, 2002, p.32). The artist’s appreciation of female beauty, and the power women wield is communicated in portraits like this one. In this work from 1993, a year in which the artist executed several pieces in sepia tones, a half-naked woman, looks down on a seated man sipping tea and staring out of the window. The expression on their faces is unreadable, conveying perhaps the lack of emotion between them and the inconsequence of their relationship. Bhattacharjee’s predilection for form and faithfulness to detail, expressed through tone and light rather than line, is also clear in this piece.
