Dilip Dasgupta has been a prominent fixture in the world of Indian art for about four decades now. Dasgupta is famous for the dramatic and meticulous landscapes he paints, both in oil and watercolors, reminiscent of traditional oriental paintings. In the vivid oils on canvas, trees with an abundance of branches grasp out in the foreground - their limbs extended and twisted - almost as if alive and reaching for us. Mountains that are characteristic of Himachal Pradesh, his home state, loom in the background, expansive, sometimes obscured by mist or clouds.
But in his watercolors, we find quite a different sentiment. Although he was born in Simla, looking at these works, anyone would mistake him for a resident or lover of Varanasi. This artist, who has been practicing since 1954, has spent almost his entire career painting scenes of the holy city, with the Ganges running past meditating ascetics and a profusion of temples spilling over its banks. Born in 1931, Dasgupta is a very experienced artist. He studied first at the Delhi Polytechnic, and later in Naples, Italy. He has held over fifty solo showings of his work so far, all over India as well as in countries like Germany, Denmark, Malta, Nepal and Italy. It was Dasgupta in fact, who taught Sakti Burman, and who influenced his style a great deal. In the 1950s Sanat Kar also spent time in Dasgupta`s studio with him.
Dilip Dasgupta has been awarded numerous awards and honors, including the 1962 President`s Plaque at the annual exhibition organized by All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi; the National Award, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; and an Italian Government Scholarship in Painting. After retirement as Professor of Painting from the Faculty of Visual Arts, Banaras Hindu University, Dasgupta is concentrating on his paintings.
