Being born into a family with an impressive artistic background, Rajeev Lochan`s creativity was nurtured at a very early stage. At the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University in Baroda, where he completed his BFA in painting and MFA in creative painting, teachers like Jeram Patel, KG Subramanyan, Raghav Kaneria, Gulammohamed Sheikh, Jyoti Bhatt and Nasreen Mohammedi further encouraged him in his work. In fact it was Bhatt, Mohammedi and Kaneria who sparked his interest in photography, and showed him how the camera could be used as a tool and a medium in art.
Lochan was initially taken up by Photo-realism, a movement that characterized Western art in the 60s and 70s. But soon he found this replication of reality quite a boring exercise and instead began using the photograph as a base to further develop on. He captured and froze moments with the lens, and then added strokes to them and blurred certain areas, as he felt necessary. This allowed him to create unique and personal interpretations of the reality that surrounds all of us.
Lochan`s earlier works on canvas were scenes of man-made surroundings devoid of human presence, reflecting apathy and neglect. Here he turned beds and even bathrooms into objects and places that drew attention to the state of man and the society he lived in. Later Lochan began painting photographs he took of ruins and ancient cities that had been devastated and left desolate by time. These melancholic studies paved the way for his recent series of mixed media works on silver gelatine print, called `The Reality of Vision,` which include solitary human figures posing in the midst of the debris of society. He has used chemical treatment, glass pigments and even crayon on these photographs, creating textures and shadows that heighten the intensity of the discomfort and anguish of a futile existence. It was one of these silver gelatine prints that won Lochan the 1999 Sahitya Kala Parishad Award in Painting.
Recently Rajeev Lochan took over as Director of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, an autonomous Institute under the Department of Culture. Married to Japanese artist Yuriko Lochan, Rajeev has a distinguished place in the world of Indian Art. He has been involved in the conceptualization and dissemination of artistic and aesthetic sensibilities at several premier institutions including the College of Art, New Delhi, Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda and the Kyoto City University of Fine Arts in Japan. He has widely exhibited, lectured and traveled and is recipient of several prestigious awards and fellowships.
The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
