Her paintings provide a platform not only for her exploration of her ”self” but as a means to be a part of another more real world. Using acrylic on paper and canvas, Sathi has created her own trademark signature style using thumb impressions directly on the painting surface. The process of creation begins with the treatment of surface either by painting a background or by covering areas using her thumb impressions, hereby categorically dividing the space. This haphazard impressioning creates movement and layering giving the impression of floating images. The direct touching of the canvas with her own hands is an intensely satisfying activity for the artist, allowing her to develop a close intimacy with her art. This form of the thumb impression was earlier introduced in the artists work as a formal design element before it resumed the significance of a symbol of fundamental self-identification. Varying gradation and colours in the thumb prints are created by overlapping of multiple impressions. This natural effect then grows organically and blends with the other elements of the painting. The use of this element is a constant in all of Sathi’s paintings. The artist has no qualms about the repetition of the form, which has unified her work in time, holding together ideas that over a period of time are subject to varying mental states. Sathi’s paintings address her present state of mind, where everything around her creates a sort of confusion. She is out to search for harmony while preserving her own identity. This need of the realization of truth and reality amidst all the different spheres of chaos and change, to retain a sense of stability and security, is reason for the enduring thumb impressions. Images of the female form, often in glamorous poses indicate the desire to be a part of another world. The artist also depicts herself as a representative of women who are constantly torn between multiple identities. Daily objects of household use like pots, pans and a pressure cooker as well as paint brushes and colour tubes, along with these images of women find their way to Sathi’s work. These works express her mixed emotions felt due to the need to find a balance between the mundane and the real. A depiction of her need to break free from the bounds of domesticity, yet to keep the warmth that comes with it.
