Images within them are rooted into unknown terrain that yield association of familiarity. The feeling of knowing these lands is because I believe that all of us walk through them within our mind's eye. They hold realness for me and in no way are they culled from dreams of fantasy. What they do evoke is mystery... an etherealness that makes the space possess a magic. My art is neither totally figurative nor completely abstract. It houses both in a comfortable balance. It is very difficult to find a "new language, yet what becomes imperative for artists is the search for a communication in their art that is readable and identifiable to their socio-political and cultural surroundings. The history of art has provided a lineage to all artists. Not unlike an ancestry one is related to a number of modes of expression and links are established with this that are both subtle and obvious in nature Speaking in post-modem context, Murali's painting are all a part of stylistics that induce a fashion between contemporary art and the classic modes that are today discerned incapable of accommodating an improved 'idea'. Obviously, like all fashions, this older style of culture decorativeness, and that of the clones it produced, suffers today from the fatigue of repetitiveness, where style faces the prospect of becoming a cliche bereft of any elemental insight. And hence, the metamorphosis of Murali's language that triumphs in its ability to shock, question the sacred and re-evaluate values. A M Murali is a meta physical geologist. Painting extraterrestrial scapes, he borrows elements from reality to establish landscapes of idealism. The intention, however, is not to escape into any Utopian realm; rather; it is to demystify the concept of painting or picture making. His colour fields in myriad shades are consciously elevated and depressed, giving perspectives that pronounce a movement in the frame. Most interesting is the shadow play that extends from the base of the element, and is intelligently organised to form an entity. Cellular in shape, the images of trees, flowers and humans, which are attached to their shadows, link the segments and accentuate the fields. The overall image is surrealistic, and is a diagram of the artist's rational contemplation of art. The artist admits that his paintings are never complete frames. In fact, they are visual ideas jotted down in the form of paintings. Murali considers his paintings as pages from his diary, reference points that inspire him to convert them into installations. Therefore, viewing perspectives are an essential aspect of his work. Murali hails from the politically active State of Kerala. That aspect of socialism has not left him untouched. As a youngster he is influenced and inspired by the leftist ideology who is 'forced' to work on social concepts with figures, which eventually left him dissatisfied. His visits to Andhra Pradesh has introduced him to the vastness of wastelands which is absent in his home state. He compares these vastness of wastelands with humanity. He combines subaltern idealism with his images. His academic training and his perceptions as an artist drives him to create some striking visuals on paper.
