Shakuntala Kulkarni was born in 1950 in Dharwad, Karnataka. She graduated in Painting from Sir JJ School of Arts in 1972. The following year, she post-graduated in murals, again from Sir J.J. School of Art. From there on, she went on to study murals and graphics at the M S University, Baroda and then Santiniketan, under famous painter Somnath Hore.
Kulkarni, in fact, has received training in murals, paintings and graphics from great Indian artists like the late S B Palsekar, Akbar Padamsee and Somnath Hore.
Talking about her art styles and the media she uses, the artist says, "My first abstract was very colorful. Then I became monochromatic. Gradually, I moved towards the figurative. Maybe because I got interested in terracotta and murals and in this media I did not want to be abstract. Also, I went to Baroda and Santiniketan, where I was exposed to a variety of influences. After that, I moved towards the figurative."
Kulkarni feels that the large canvasses she uses for painting have begun to restrict her somewhere down the line. "I wish to go beyond the canvas, into real space," she muses. Tones of gray, brown, black and pale ochre dominate her works. "Color as a statement always eluded me," she explains. "I prefer working in grays and browns."
Besides painting, she is also fascinated by theatre. She has worked closely with Amol Palekar, a filmmaker and an actor as well as famous dramatist Satyadev Dubey. In fact, Palekar created a dance drama based on one of her works.
Kulkarni held her first exhibition, a group show, in 1972, while her first solo exhibition, a collection of abstracts, was held in 1978. She has participated in several exhibitions held by the Lalit Kala Akademi, Bharat Bhavan, Birla Academy and International Women`s Forum in New Delhi.
Shakuntla Kulkarni lives and works in Mumbai.
