Pradeepkumar KP was born and brought up in one of the remotest village of the Malabar coast in Kerala, where 500 years before Vasco Da Gama landed and communist movements originated, it was the land of Kalari warriors and celebratory colourful rituals like Theyyam Thirra.

He completed his bachelors in sculpture from College of Fine Arts Thiruvananthapuramin in the mid 90’s, and then turned to painting via the mode of creating drawings for his sculptures. There the artist was actively involved in all kind of art activities happening in his vicinity. Apart from this, being exposed to this sensibility ever since his childhood, a background created of socio- political and historical relevance are evident in his art. As there existed an extreme practice of figurative art making and drawing not only in the curriculum but also in the art practice, his work does manifest figures and landscape, but in a contemporary context.

Pradeepkumar continues to maintain a classical approach to his painting predominantly using oils on canvas. The artist’s work is predominantly about people around him and the changes in landscape, which also are evidence as well as party to political statements. The socio political transition of the 90’s clearly finds place in this artists work.

His depiction of the native and rural is proof of his desire to retain his Indian entity. The rural landscape is not confined just to the visual imagery but also to the cultural conflict towards a liberalized context. In some paintings, images related to ancient myths and history are reread in a contemporary context. Often an image becomes a symbol, which is repeated in several works, like the figure of a dog would be representative of a guardian in front of wealth is purely an Indian concept of protection etc. An image of a granary with a heap of grain reveals various dimensions of socio cultural aspects like the history of land reforms and the decline of farmer act. Still life objects also become a part of this figurative language. A strong desire to create his own language, despite all the inherent influences makes Pradeepkumar’s work individualist as well as contemporary. His paintings are more subjective and concentrate on the figuration and each detail to reveal the character of the personality. Clearly defined objects, each signifying something within the social context, integrates with each other, whether they are still life ones or figures, to create a whole, which is not only a statement of the artists psyche but also reflective of the reaction of the proximity and reality of rural, social and political intertwining which eventually rules the lives of the masses of rural India.

The way India is globalized in a neo political situation with feudalism and consumerism is reflected strongly in Pradeepkumar's work. His new works are based on a rethinking of figurative language based in self-portraitures in various emotional segments Pradeepkumar KP finds meaning in travelling, to observe places and people around him, not only in search of wider spectrum of thought and the reality of ones existence but he found comfort in the consistency of transition. The artist left Kerala in search of a more central destination in terms of geographical location as well as a look into diverse lifestyles and cultures.

Pradeepkumar KP has held several solo shows in Kerala and is currently living and working in Baroda.
