Prabhakar Alok received his Bachelor’s degree with a specialization in painting from Patna University in 2000. He then moved to Baroda to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Maharaja Sayajirao University, where he completed his Master’s degree, this time choosing to specialize in printmaking, in 2005.
Alok’s work points to the angst of the individual in the complex contemporary world. Most of the artist’s work revolves around the anxiety of urban living. Figures in his paintings are usually self portraits trapped in a background of urban reality. Couples tellingly surrounded by mugs of coffee; a distant, fast diminishing self and an eclectic mix of colours are hallmarks of his work.
With bright, almost chaotic backdrops, Alok highlights the multiplicity of choice that the urban world offers, but also the fact that these choices are never able to satisfy. Alok’s multilayered works also point to the apathy of society and the rapid, unemotional urbanization that the individual is subject to. It is interesting to note how while society offers a plethora of choices, the individual is rarely taken into account, while the world around him rapidly transforms.
Alok had his first solo show in Patna in 2002. His work has also been a part of group exhibitions including 'Cutting Chai' at Sarjan Art Gallery, Vadodara, in 2009; '[Obtuse-Acute]' at Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2009; 'Freshly Squeezed' at Suchitrra Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; 'Pro-Imagists' at Sridharani Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008; 'Mindscape, Magic & Mystery' at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 2008; ‘Two x Two’, organized by Alekhya Foundation at Sarjan Art Gallery, Vadodara, in 2006; ‘Colors-2006’organized by Artland at the Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai, in 2006; and ‘Peep Show’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2006.
Among his many awards and honors are the prizes that Alok received at the All India Painting Competition organized by Avantika, New Delhi, in 2002, and at the State Level Art Exhibition organized by the All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi, in 2000.
