Surjit Akre has been painting for the last twenty years. She was born in Tarn Taran in Punjab but has spent most of her life in Delhi. As soon as she completed a Diploma in Commercial Art, her father was posted to Moscow. There she studied oil painting under Prof. V.N. Oreshnikov from 1977 to 1985 at the prestigious Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Her work during this period shows a clear influence of Russian culture.
Akre over the years has studied portraits and nudes and developed her own distinct style, texturally rich yet simple, devoid of unnecessary clutter. Being a woman she herself has faced many of the problems in daily life that she depicts in her paintings. She chooses the medium that is best known to her to portray the emotions, aspirations and frustrations of ordinary people around her coping with their daily lives. Her use of warm subdued colors enhances the somber mood and atmosphere, leaving a lasting impression of the image on the onlooker
She held her first solo exhibition in St. Petersburg (Moscow) in 1985, and again in New Delhi in 1986 and 1989. In the last twenty years, Surjit Akre has exhibited her work in most of the prestigious art galleries, holding several solo shows and has participated in many major group exhibitions in India and abroad. She was awarded President of India's Silver Plaque in 1990. Apart from painting, she is also involved in promoting art and culture through various fora, such as the Indo-Russian Roerich Art Club, of which she is the Vice-Chairwoman. She is also the President and Founder Member of Indo-Russian Academy of Fine Arts and Sports.
