Born in 1985 in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, Preeti Agrawal studied at Lalit Kala Sansthan at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra, completing her Bachelor’s degree there in 2005. She then pursued a Master’s degree with a specialization in Printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, graduating in 2008.
Preeti Agrawal’s work borders on the surreal while being intensely figurative. Influenced by mythology, the artist’s figures turn into trees, or attempt to fly like Icarus. However, Agrawal manages to personalize these legends in her work; just as her version of Daphne clutches a cushion as she turns into a tree, her Icarus-like figure’s feet are bound like those of a bungee jumper. Mixing reality with mythology, the artist grapples with issues of fear and apprehension, creating images that usually have a fantasy-like atmosphere. Through her images, she also evokes memories in her viewers, and their own irrational fears that need to be addressed.
Agrawal’s work has been a part of several group exhibitions including ‘Gen X’ at Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; ‘Horizons Divergent’ at the Academy of Art, New Delhi, in 2007; ‘Winter Collection’ at Mahua Art Gallery, Bangalore, in 2007; ‘Beyond Boundaries’ in Mumbai, in 2007; two shows at Mahua Art Gallery, Bangalore, in 2006 and 2005; and ‘Itisha’ in Agra in 2002.
In 2007, the artist participated in the French Biennale Exhibition and 21st All India Art Contest, South Central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC), Nagpur, after participating in the International Print Biennial Exhibition at Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, in 2006.
Agrawal was awarded by the State Lalit Kala Akademi, Ahmedabad, in 2007-08, and also received a National Scholarship for Young Artists from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for the years 2005-07.
